Many independent bands offer their songs on their websites and ask people to PWYC... This article from the NYT mentions an artist that does PWYC but also posts the average amount that people donate... Authors could post their books online as HTML and people could donate money to obtain the PDF or eBook version (a PDF is not exactly the best format, it's too static...) People could even buy a print copy if they felt like showing it off on their shelf, which is the true purpose of paper copies, beyond their life as text support.
